Quality and sustainability at Delsbo Candle

All candles that we produce can carry the Nordic Swan Ecolabel.

Delsbo Candle obtained a certified quality management system according to ISO 9001 in the mid-1990s when we were part of the Duni Group. In 2004, we became an independent company and chose to maintain our certification, as we consider ISO 9001 to be an excellent tool for structured quality management.

Our candles are RAL-certified and are regularly tested at DEKRA’s laboratory in Germany, where they consistently receive full approval.

We comply with the requirements of the European standards EN 15426 (Specification for sooting behaviour), EN 15493 (Specifications for fire safety), and EN 15494 (Product safety labels).

We submit an annual environmental report to the Norrhälsinge Environmental Office. Our operations do not require notification or special permits.

We report our chemical usage annually to the Swedish Chemicals Agency in accordance with the Chemical Products and Biotechnical Organisms Ordinance (2008:245) and KIFS 2017:7 regarding chemical products.

We work systematically with environmental and occupational health and safety issues, including energy usage, waste management, fire prevention, employee safety, equality and non-discrimination, as well as business ethics and workplace co-determination.

Environmentally certified candles

Delsbo Candle is highly committed to environmental issues. In 2008, we developed the world’s first environmentally certified candles in collaboration with the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. Se kriterier här.

It was a very educational process during which we came to understand the scope of the problem with palm oil. The Nordic Swan Ecolabel’s experts explained to us that the existing certification for palm oil (RSPO) was not fully reliable, given the large sums of money involved in that industry. Efforts are ongoing to produce sustainably sourced palm oil, but at Delsbo Candle we still do not feel confident that its origin can be guaranteed with absolute certainty. Because we care about the rainforest and its inhabitants, we have chosen, in collaboration with our stearin supplier AAK (AarhusKarlshamn), to use only fat from slaughter by-products as the raw material for the stearin in our candles.

We use almost exclusively stearin, which is a renewable raw material. However, for technical reasons, we currently need to use a small amount of paraffin in our colored candles. We are exploring solutions to eliminate this as well.

At Delsbo Candle, we have a long tradition of giving employees significant influence, for example, planning their own work shifts. Already in the 1980s, we addressed the issue of equality by systematically eliminating the practice of men operating the machines while women packed the candles. Since then, anyone, regardless of gender, performs all tasks in our production – which may seem obvious today, but at the time was quite innovative. All our employees have both the responsibility and authority to make key decisions within the company.
